Who if anyone considers it worthwhile for me to actually be doing what I am doing at this time which is, actually, hilariously, rewriting UNNAMED (under the working title Anonymity in the Modern Age, which the intrepid reader may recall is the original name of Unnamed).

This rewrite is compulsive and propulsive. I don't know what to do to make the book perfect but in some ways I know exactly what to do to make it the book I always sort of meant it to be. But I sort of didn't exactly know how to do that until now. It's very strange this feeling.

I am doing this because one of my school buddies was like, man, if you wrote a novel, and there's anything about it that you actually like, why the fuck did you give up on it? And I was like

So I'm doing that. And sort of working on Elegant Battle Face Teenagers one agonizing realization of derivativity at a time. I hate read The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones over the weekend and I was SHOCKED and APPALLED to discover that (duh) a) I didn't invent drawing on oneself for super power reasons as an original thought and b) it was HARRY POTTER fanfic with the names and situations vaguely sort of find/replaced.

Not to mention that my hero in EBFT is basically a male Buffy with ranged rather than melee super powers. Not to mention that blah blah blah.

I really need to be a staff writer or editor where I can make other people's ideas better than they already are. I'm so repetitive. That said.

ANONYMITY IN THE MODERN AGE - that book has some dope shit it in it man. Cool.

Huzzah! Also, "Elegant Battle Face Teenagers" is one of the best working titles I've ever heard.

I think it's probably worth returning to Unnamed, because I never really felt like you were finished with it so much as overwhelmed by it, and there were some really strong ideas and passages. However, despite my support in this case, I don't so much agree with your colleague that everything can be rescued or that the best use of time is always to keep working on or fighting for something that's not working. Opportunity cost, yo.

Don't be so harsh on Elegant Battle Face Teenagers. Of course you have influences. And are aware of them. Doesn't necessarily weaken the project or mean anybody notices. "The Sleeping People" is an adaptation to begin with, but is also full of direct fairytale and mythological references that are not in the Lethem Story - not just Sleeping Beauty, but the garden of eden (eating the fruit before coming to a realization about wanting a physical relationship), Cinderella (clock strikes midnight, she takes her shoe off), Jack and the Beanstalk, Superman and Lois Lane, and I could go on but I've already written a dissertation about this and don't feel like recapping. One shot is a direct callbak to, for instance, The Fountain, and one of my bits of guidance to the score composers was NIN's Ghosts. None of this bothers anybody; I don't think anyone has ever called that film unoriginal or predictable.

I mean, you of all people should know the value of the remix or mix tape or cover song.

I always work better when I have at least two very different projects going. That way I can procrastinate on whichever one is currently bugging me by working on the other on.

And, again: I am in the camp of being excited about the return to the Unnamed. Not only do I think you can make it work, but I also, significantly, think you are the only person who can make it work.

I feel like it has been reused or recycled or summoned by a lot of the work you've done since, which suggests to me that it needs to finally be tackled, with your new powers.

But so does EBFT. Which reminds me of one time I read that Fitzgerald supported himself while writing novels by writing and selling short stories. And I hate his stupid face.
